Biography

Biography
Born in Paris in 1960—a time of British rock, Hollywood glamour, and the explosive rise of American Pop—Patrick Rubinstein grew up surrounded by a deep appreciation for art, culture, and invention. From his mother, he inherited a passion for cinema, and from his father—a trailblazer who introduced him to the techniques of kinetic art—he absorbed a sense of creative daring and technical experimentation. These twin influences laid the foundation for an artistic career that would fuse nostalgia and innovation into one hypnotic, ever-moving visual language.
At the core of Rubinstein’s practice is a masterful integration of Optical Art and Kinetic Art, two movements that manipulate perception and challenge the traditional relationship between artwork and observer. Rubinstein expands on this legacy through his own pioneering techniques, crafting artworks that literally shift before your eyes. Whether depicting icons like Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, or more abstract patterning, his compositions are in constant motion—animated not by motors or screens, but by the viewer’s movement, changing light, and evolving perspective.
Rubinstein employs two proprietary techniques to achieve this effect: the Double Principle and the Triple Principle. In the Double Principle, two images are intricately interwoven onto a pleated surface. As the viewer moves left or right, each image reveals itself, overlapping and dissolving into one another in a dance of perception. The Triple Principle is even more complex: three separate images are layered—one central and two lateral—so that as the viewer changes position, the work transforms entirely. From straight on, the main subject dominates; from the sides, alternate narratives emerge, offering a multi-faceted visual experience that is always in flux. Light, too, becomes a participant, altering the depth and tone of the image depending on its angle and intensity.
His thematic universe is just as dynamic. Rubinstein revisits the vibrant, color-soaked pop culture of the 1960s, infuses it with the black-and-white sophistication of the 1950s, and electrifies it with the rebellious energy of 1980s street art. In doing so, he creates a kaleidoscopic blend of Optical, Pop, and Urban Art that transcends time and genre. His works are both a tribute to cultural memory and an invitation to re-engage with it through a lens of constant renewal.
What truly sets Rubinstein apart is how interactive his works become. The viewer is not just an observer, but an essential part of the composition. With every step, the piece shifts. With every glance, it reveals something new. As Rubinstein once said, "The eye is the most sophisticated of all mechanisms”—and in his hands, it becomes the animator of the artwork itself.
By transforming visual memory into kinetic experience, Patrick Rubinstein redefines how we see, respond to, and connect with art in the 21st century. His works are not just objects of beauty; they are living images, ever-changing, ever-surprising—infused with movement, memory, and meaning.
