About the artwork

Hiro Ando's "Nishikigoi" sculpture is a captivating blend of traditional Japanese imagery and contemporary artistic expression. The piece reimagines the iconic koi fish, a symbol of perseverance and good fortune, in a striking metallic form. Half of the fish's body is rendered in a highly polished, mirror-like silver, reflecting its surroundings and creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. The other half features a textured silver finish, adding depth and tactile interest. The fish's fins and tail are depicted with stylized, fluid lines, emphasizing its graceful movement. Mounted on a dark, reflective base, the sculpture appears almost to float, enhancing its ethereal quality. Ando's fusion of classic subject matter with modern materials and techniques results in a visually arresting and culturally resonant artwork.

About the artist

Acquiring his degree from the University of Art, Hiro Ando began his prolific career in 1995 in Tokyo, depicting its nighttime urban landscape. With a lot of inspiration, the streets proved to be an endless source of material for his narratives which often included the red fish in addition to the urban background. The act of the red fish in his paintings greatly reminds of the ancient Japanese watercolor paintings, thus making his work permeated with both a contemporary and traditional feeling. With his artistic beginnings tied to illustration, he would draw several sketches before actually working on the canvas, and his practice has since spread to video material, digital support, and sculpture.
