About the artwork

This semi-abstract painting by Liu Zhenyong depicts the face of a man, who gazes straight towards the viewer. The work is highly textured as the artist uses thick brushstrokes to depict the man’s form, creating a fascinating visual experience for the viewer. Its dark colour palette imbues the painting with an atmosphere and mood of solemnity, that is reflected by the figure, who appears to be knitting his brows with a focused expression. Like his human subject, through this evocative and layered work, Liu leaves the viewer with further thoughts to ponder about the complexity of human emotions and experience.

About the artist

Born in 1980 in Zhuzhou City, Hunan Province, China, Liu Zheng Hong graduated from Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts in 2004 with a major in oil painting. Armed with textured movement and a vivid sense of colour, Zheng Yong channels the most intrinsic of Chinese sensibilities into a distinctly western medium.
