Jacques Pellegrin

About The Artist

Born in France on 17 June 1944, Jacques Pellegrin paints portraits, landscapes and still lifes. He started painting at the age of eight and at the tender age of eleven won the first prize from the Aix-en-Provence city hall. His style connected first to the Classical and Realist art movements, however, he proceeded to discover Impressionism which revolutionized his art style. After studying to be a translator in Munich, he obtained a German (language) license in Aix-en-Provence, but teaching was quickly forsaken in favor of living a life of chance as a free artist. In 1980, he devoted himself to painting and studied German Expressionism. Pellegrin was influenced by Fauvists and French Expressionists such as Vincent van Gogh, Andre Derain, Albert Marquet, Kees van Dongen, and Henri Matisse. He also followed artists of the Provence and Marseilles school. His fundamental guideline was to paint and depict his epoch, or his time.

The artist frequently uses strong colours and underlines his figures with a thick, black stroke, emphasizing every corner and detail of his canvas, with each painting telling a story, anecdote, or memory. In Jacques' works, characters and symbols are shown in unrealistic colours, shapes, dimensions and sizes, giving his paintings a more animated feel. The departure from reality is a greater expression of how Jacques views scenes and brings his characters to life for his viewers through this unique technique. In spite of being strongly anchored in his epoch, when Pellegrin raises up the past, he does not emphasize nostalgia, only affection - sealing his images in a timeless sheen of celebration.
