About the artwork

Custom to Motherland No.2 is an under life-sized figure of an ancient warrior kneeling down in a pose of supplication, his forehead touching the ground such that his face cannot be seen. Cai Zhisong's masterly use of the material emphasizes the fragility of the figure, as in the way the lead sheets are creased to follow the movement of the figure or the careful arrangement of the lead wires to form his ornate hairstyle. Cai's works evoke an ongoing concern with time, coupled with an awareness of the change that accompanies it. With time, attitude changes, tradition fades, lessons of history are being forgotten, and what generation learned at the price of million lives devoted to a country, erased. If the artist underlines this fear, he also points out the immortality of human emotion and the eternal existence of soldiers devotion.
