About the artwork
In this work, Murakami evokes powerful imagery that blends the new and old using the format of tando (circular paintings). With flat aesthetics that are simultaneously characteristic of both traditional woodblock paintings and modern anime, Murakami depicts a field of his signature flower motif against a backdrop of faded yellow and white checkered patterns. The wildly successful neo-pop artist pays tribute to both the roots of Japanese art and modern “otaku” culture.
