About the artwork
Screenprint , 23.5x41.5cm sheet size : 50x50cm Murakami illustrates an adorable colourful panda lying supine, appearing to have just awoken from its slumber. Its features resemble that of Mr DOB (a whimsical motif character he created during his early oeuvre), with the characters ‘P’ on either ear and its face forming the letter ‘O’. The warm colour palette juxtaposed with the panda’s relaxed pose makes the viewer assume the role of an intimate friend. Panda Club, Sleepy Time is an inviting work, at once making the viewer feel a sense of intimacy and joy when appreciating the artwork. With a playful and cartoonish subject matter, Murakami once again blurs the distinction between high art and pop culture, subverting our very notion of what can be considered as art.
