About the artwork

‘Kansei: Wildflowers glowing in the night’ is a tando (circular-format painting) inspired by both traditional and modern Japanese visual aesthetics. ‘Kansei’ is one of Ogata Korin’s aliases, and he was one of the pioneers of the Rinpa School of Japanese painting. This work pays tribute to that with the focus on natural elements such as the gently flowing river and the central focus on carnations. However, Murakami has cleverly re-imagined this visual aesthetic by adding on his own graphic elements. From the almost neon shades which starkly contrast against the black background to the smiling flowers that have replaced depictions of carnations, Murakami transcends the traditional visual vocabulary to forge his own unique path.

About the artist

Born in Tokyo in 1962, Takashi Murakami is a globally celebrated Japanese artist who masterfully dismantles the barriers between fine art and commercial culture. He coined the term 'Superflat' to define his vibrant, boundary-blurring aesthetic, reflecting both traditional Japanese art and the complexities of post-war Japanese society. Murakami's influential works have captivated audiences worldwide, gracing the halls of prestigious institutions like the Guggenheim Bilbao, MoCA Los Angeles, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
