About the artwork

In this work, Takashi Murakami depicts the characters in Doraemon floating above a field of smiley flowers - his signature motif - against a bright blue sky backdrop using a neo-pop aesthetic. The flat white planes of colours depict clouds, which add a sense of depth to the otherwise two-dimensional artwork. Almost as if straight out of the cartoon series itself, the scene seems to make one reminisce about their childhood days of watching Doraemon on television. The fields of flowers are colourful, illustrated using Murakami’s signature style of superflat, which is inspired by Japanese pop-culture. By choosing a conventionally shunned subject matter to be reprinted and featured en-masse, the boundaries between high and low art are questioned.

About the artist

Born in Tokyo in 1962, Takashi Murakami is a globally celebrated Japanese artist who masterfully dismantles the barriers between fine art and commercial culture. He coined the term 'Superflat' to define his vibrant, boundary-blurring aesthetic, reflecting both traditional Japanese art and the complexities of post-war Japanese society. Murakami's influential works have captivated audiences worldwide, gracing the halls of prestigious institutions like the Guggenheim Bilbao, MoCA Los Angeles, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
