About the artwork
In this work, Murakami depicts the characters in Doraemon sat amidst a backdrop of Murakami’s famous smiling flower motif. Distinctly his trademark, the happy flowers are of a myriad of colours. Almost as if a playful juxtaposition of characters, whilst the flowers in the back are eerily happy, Doraemon sat in front has a sullen expression, while Nobita Nobi (the main female character) sits back to back with Shizuka Minamoto (the main male character), the former of which has a red blush on her cheek. The picture hints at a narrative that reveals itself the more the viewer spends time with it.
