About the artwork

A distinct comment on the practice of painting can be found in Eric Chan's insistence of a silky, superflat surface. Despite the painterly appearance of the images, all of his canvases are level, without a hint of impasto. The only brushstrokes seen are the fine horizontal or vertical strokes that make his blurred effects possible. In an interview with Lee Weng Choy, Eric mentioned that he wanted his work to appear “like box cubes with paint on one surface.” This deliberate flatness evokes the glossy quality of magazine pictures. Multiple dimensions of Eric practice, from his process of making the images to the way he paints to keep the balance between the traditional and contemporary. This tension renders his work so very compelling to the viewers eye.

About the artist

Eric Chan (born 28 March 1975 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) is one of Southeast Asia's notable contemporary painters. He is currently based in Singapore. A Masters of Fine Art (Painting) graduate of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia and Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore, Chan has carved out a reputation for reinvigorating interest in painting as a resonant contemporary media. His paintings are shaped by photographic and camera effects and aesthetics — from the blurring or smearing of paintings, to the distinctive graphics of film negatives with tonal inversions. He has actively exhibited in Singapore and overseas including UK, Hong Kong, UAE, Australia, Malaysia, Phillipines and Indonesia. In addition, he has also enjoyed recognition for his work receiving amongst others, the Jurors' Choice at the Philip Morris ASEAN Art Awards (2002) and the Highly Commended accolade at the 2003 UOB Painting of the Year Competition. His works are collected by the Singapore Art Museum and in corporate and public collections such as the CapitaLand Collection, UOB Art Collection, UBS Art Collection, OCBC Art Collection and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore.
