About the artwork

In this work by Hong Sek Chern, the artist skilfully uses Chinese ink to depict the structures she observed on East St and 3rd Avenue in New York City. Sek Chern captures these scenes in a fresh light, rendering them with her unique multi-point perspective of spaces which sometimes blend and merge into one another. She partitions the structures and segments them into layers - symbolic of the different lives and harmonious coexistence of a vibrant, diverse community that resides in each of the various buildings. Sensitive to painterly surfaces and affected by the world around her, the artist hopes that what she creates will provoke thought and cause us to view what we see everyday in a new light.
