About the artwork

Harmen finds his inspiration from the minimalism and abstract expressionism artistic movements, as well as gestural painting, in which expressive brushstrokes deliberately emphasise the movement of the painter’s hands. Through his works, the artist focuses on material, paint, and its sculptural presence, such that movement becomes the painting. To Harmen, good art reflects the present movement, which he sees as being without form, and should be able to convey things that may not be visible, such as universal human emotions. Through the simplicity of form, the artist creates visual poetry that highlights his skilful use of materials and visual mastery.

About the artist

Harmen aims to pursue a new minimalism through his works, exploring sculptural potential, the dynamics of the brushstroke, and how the physical properties of the material can become the subject of an artwork. With a monochromatic colour palette inspired by both minimalism and abstract expressionism, the artist eliminates all recognizable subjects in his work, instead of placing visual emphasis on the purity of form and the unique textures created through his rigorous process. He works with plaster to create the unique effect of thick impasto, introducing the element of light and shadow.By creating art that resonates with viewers and generates emotions felt deeply within them, Harmen strives to achieve what he deems to be the true aesthetic experience: The collapse of the egocentric awareness, the awareness of oneness, in which the mind becomes totally free and available to create something new.
