About the artwork

Singaporean artist Lim Tze Peng has long favoured trees as a subject to paint, considering them to be symbols of vitality, robustness and exuberance. In this work, Lim uses bold lines to portray the trunk of the tree, while numerous lines that majestically extend from the trunk represent the many branches it has. Through his skillful brushstrokes, Lim highlights the strength of the tree, as it stands firmly rooted to the ground despite being at the mercy of the elements. A sense of energy is illustrated through Lim’s use of colour, with the mix of warm and cool toned colour washes presenting a vibrant visual contrast and bringing the tree to life. Lim’s masterful depiction of the perennial plant clearly highlights his skill as an artist and the appreciation he has for his longtime muse.
