About the artwork
‘Reflections’ by David Kracov depicts the iconic New York skyline in a stylized manner. Parting the centre of the skyline, where the World Trade Centre Towers one stood, a rabble of vibrantly coloured butterflies soar into the sky. Consisting of exactly 2,977 individually hand-painted butterflies, the artist’s characteristic symbols represent the exact number of lives lost on 11th September 2001, and is a tribute to the delicacy and value of each life. In the water below the cityscape, the towers can be seen as fluid and poignant reflections. Despite the darker context of the work, Kracov employs color and uplifting forms to imbue it with positive energy, presenting both a eulogy and vibrant celebration of each life.
