About the artwork

This piece is one of Lim Tze Peng’s earlier works, during a period in which the artist was experimenting and finding his own unique style. Lim incorporates both Chinese and Western painting techniques, fusing Chinese ink painting with the Western method of direct observation. Additionally, both warm and cool colours are used in this work, with the cool blue of the women’s clothing contrasting the warm colours of the buildings in the background. This creates a fascinating visual contrast for the viewer, imbuing the scene with vibrancy yet a sense of nostalgia as well, reflective of the painting’s subject of a bygone era. Lim skillfully captures the gradual disappearance of olden Singapore through his use of negative space as a border, to create a faded effect evoking feelings of wistfulness for the viewer.
