Biography

David Bromley was born in Sheffield, England in 1960 and immigrated to Australia with his family in 1964. He began his career in Adelaide as a potter, but eventually turned to his true passion - painting. He draws much of his inspiration from childhood books, popular culture and artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Glen Baxter.

David Bromley needs no introduction - he is highly regarded as one of the most collectable artists and his work is sought after around the globe. You can’t open a Vogue Living or Belle Magazine without seeing a Bromley gracing the walls of celebrity homes. It is no surprise that Bromley has painted the likes of Kylie Minogue, Megan Gale and Hugo Weaving. Deutscher Menzies auction house sold 2 recent Bromley works for $59,800 and $27,600.

In the works based on children, impressions of the joy and innocence of childhood are ever-present. Bromley draws leverage on the universality of childhood, where he believes life is most delightful. The compositions are infused with the nostalgia of childhood, and abound with toys, pets and adventure. The artist displays a playful inquisitiveness that provokes fond memories of youth.

He uses colour and figurative expressionism with sentimentality, and the symbolism of Pop Art to hint at the gregarious and effervescent nature of children.

Since the mid-1980s, Bromley has had more than 30 solo exhibitions in Australia as well exhibiting regularly throughout Europe, the UK, South Africa, Asia and the US.

For 5 consecutive years, David Bromley has been a finalist for one of Australia's oldest and most prestigious art awards, the Archibald Prize. He has also been listed as one of Australia’s 50 most collectible artists.

His works are collected by Baker & McKenzie, Sydney, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Northern Territory Art Museum, Darwin, Tamar Collection, Tasmania, Art Gallery of South Australia, Tasmanian Museum.
